How to Clean a Dog Bed (Without Ruining It)

A clean dog bed isn’t just nicer to be around — it’s healthier for your dog, cutting down on odor, allergens, and bacteria. Here’s how to keep it fresh without wearing it out.

Weekly upkeep takes two minutes

Between deeper cleans, shake the bed out and vacuum it to lift hair, dander, and dirt. A quick once-over with a lint roller or pet-hair brush keeps things tidy and makes washes easier.

Washing a removable cover

Most quality beds have a zip-off cover. Wash it on a gentle cycle in cold or warm water with a mild, fragrance-free detergent. Skip the fabric softener — it can leave a residue some dogs dislike, and it reduces the fabric’s softness over time.

Washing the whole bed

If the bed is machine-washable as a whole, use the largest setting your machine allows so it isn’t crammed. For big beds, a laundromat’s commercial washer works best. Always check the care label first.

Drying matters most

Dry covers and beds thoroughly — damp filling can grow mildew. Tumble dry on low or air dry in the sun, which naturally freshens and helps kill bacteria. Make sure the bed is completely dry before your dog uses it again.

Banish odors naturally

Sprinkle baking soda over the bed, let it sit for 15–20 minutes, then vacuum it up. It’s a simple, pet-safe way to neutralize smells between washes.

How often?

Aim to wash the cover every 1–2 weeks, and do a full clean monthly — more often if your dog goes outside a lot or has allergies.

A few minutes of care keeps your dog’s favorite spot cozy, fresh, and lasting longer.
